				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A recent BBC investigation (listen to <a title="Face the Facts, BBC Radio 4, 16th Jan 2013" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01ptzmf" target="_blank">Face the Facts, BBC Radio 4, 16th Jan 2013</a>) claimed that the incidence of campylobacter infection in the UK is increasing. It said that 90% of all hospital admissions due to food-borne diseases are as a result of campylobacter and that 60-80% of these could be attributed to poultry meat.</p>
<p>Campylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK and, while it can be contracted from red meat, contaminated water and unpasteurised milk, the major source of the infection is from poultry. The UK Food Standards Agency&#8217;s research suggests that 65% of raw, shop bought chicken is contaminated with campylobacter. Werner Strydom from Vion, one of the five major broiler producers, said that &#8220;Everything we do on farm[s] seem to have very little effect on the number of infections that go into the food chain&#8221;.</p>
